Fred Thompson Supporters Should Vote for Ron Paul
With Fred Thompson's recent departure from the presidential race, Ron Paul is the only limited government, constitutional conservative still in the running. Fred Thompson supporters looking for another candidate to back should switch to Ron Paul.
Why Ron Paul? Fred Thompson was running on a platform featuring limited government, constitutional federalism, and a realistic appraisal of America's looming fiscal crisis. The only other candidate taking a similarly serious approach to those issues is Ron Paul.
Thompson supporters should appreciate that Ron Paul is even more aggressive than their candidate was in taking the axe to the federal budget. Thompson is to be commended for wanting to eliminate wasteful government spending and for talking about entitlements reform, but Ron Paul would go even farther, eliminating entire federal departments that don't pass Constitutional muster. He would balance the budget his first year in office by cutting spending, and veto any attempts by Congress to overspend.
Fred Thompson is also to be commended for making the issue of constitutional federalism a central part of his campaign platform. Thompson supporters can rest assured that there is no more ardent supporter of the Constitutional separation of federal and state power than Ron Paul, who has the voting record to back it up. "Dr. No" earned his nickname for voting "no" on any bill that isn't strictly authorized by the Constitution.
In a field with highly flawed early front-runners, Fred Thompson was supposed to have been the candidate who could appeal to traditional conservative voters in the Republican Party. Things didn't pan out that way, but Thompson supporters looking for the most conservative candidate remaining should consider Ron Paul: he is pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, anti-amnesty, pro-smaller government, and pro-10th Amendment, and has never flip-flopped on any of those issues.
The one possible objection that Thompson supporters might have concerning Ron Paul is on the Iraq war, but that shouldn't outweigh his fundamental agreement with Thompson on all of the major conservative principles. Ron Paul has argued persuasively that the traditional Republican position on foreign policy is to avoid nation building and unnecessary wars. While Thompson supporters might differ on whether the Iraq war was necessary, they should be able to appreciate Ron Paul's fundamental philosophy.
Ron Paul is for a strong national defense, and for secure borders. He is serious about pursuing actual terrorists, and proposed significant and serious steps to do that after the September 11th attacks. Ron Paul has won the support of military personnel and veterans throughout his Congressional campaigns, and has led all presidential candidates in donations from the military.
Fred Thompson supporters looking to advance Thompson's goals of limited government, constitutional federalism, and a serious approach to America's fiscal situation should consider themselves fortunate to have a reliably conservative and principled constitutionalist like Ron Paul as their new preferred presidential candidate.
