Ron Paul Dominates Fourth Quarter Fundraising

The FEC fundraising reports are in for the fourth quarter, and as expected, Ron Paul led all Republican candidates in donations for the last three months of 2007 (not including loans):

Total Donations, Q4
$19.9M -- Ron Paul
$14.4M -- Rudy Giuliani
$9.1M -- Mitt Romney
$8.9M -- Fred Thompson
$6.8M -- John McCain
$6.6M -- Mike Huckabee

In the all-important cash-on-hand column, Ron Paul trailed only Rudy Giuliani, who had been the leading fundraiser throughout the year:

Cash on Hand, 12/31/07
$12.8M -- Rudy Giuliani
$7.8M -- Ron Paul
$2.9M -- John McCain
$2.4M -- Mitt Romney
$2.1M -- Fred Thompson
$1.9M -- Mike Huckabee

Some candidates showed a distressing tendency to campaign on borrowed money, not a good sign for someone who wants to become president and inherit our national debt of $9+ trillion:

Campaign Debt, 12/31/07
$35.4M -- Mitt Romney
$4.5M -- John McCain
$1.2M -- Rudy Giuliani
$0.4M -- Fred Thompson
$0.1M -- Mike Huckabee
$0.0M -- Ron Paul

Who spent the most in the fourth quarter? Not surprisingly, it was Romney, although Ron Paul also spent heavily, as he built up a national campaign organization (which McCain, Romney, and Giuliani had done earlier in the year) and advertised by radio, direct mail and TV in the early states.

Expenditures in Q4
$34.0M -- Mitt Romney
$18.3M -- Rudy Giuliani
$17.6M -- Ron Paul
$14.0M -- Fred Thompson
$10.5M -- John McCain
$5.4M -- Mike Huckabee

Ron Paul has been maintaining a strong fundraising pace in the first quarter of 2008, having raised $4.0 million in January, with a new money bomb planned for February 1st to start the month off with a bang. As the numbers show, raising a lot of money is no guarantee of success, but it is the price of admission to the big leagues.

For a candidate dismissed as a long shot fringe candidate all year long by the mainstream media, Ron Paul has run an impressive campaign, and the generosity and commitment of all his supporters has allowed him to continue in the race, outlasting other top-tier contenders like Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. As a certain CNN news anchor might say, "Amazing.... Amazing."
